Why can I not edit my own post on this forum?

I want to make a post and edit it. But, I can't. I can still edit my own replies to forum posts. Is it an inherent limitation of zot protocol?

You should be able to edit/delete the direct message you sent to the forum and the changes should propagate to the forum. If this does not work, there is a bug involved.

You don't own the forum post hence you can not modify it. As mentioned you should be able to modify the original direct message to the forum.

My understanding is:

When you write a letter (= here: a post or comment), there several ways to publish it: You can send it to a newspaper (= here: a forum), and its editor will have the say whether you can modify it afterwards. You can send it to your own blackboard at the front of your house (= here: your own channel), then this decision is up to you. If your neighbor allows you to use his house's blackboard (here: his channel), he can grant permissions for publishing posts, and for editing (or not). You may even want publish it on your own channel configured without any reading rights for anybody but yourself (e.g. for a personal notes channel).

So after sending away your posts or comment, it resides in the addressed channel (for a forum: usually not your own) - If you publish it on your channel and a forum channel in parallel (which Zot allows), you can find it on your channel, too, and modify it there - But that does not mean this affects the edition published on the forum channel, too.

I am not sure, though, if you can delete your posts (and all comments to it) on a forum channel.

This is for posts - Some other formats (like wiki, articles, etc.) actually stay on your server, for you to decide what you do with it (or whom you allow to modify them, or comments to them).

I suppose, Hubzilla is complex to cater for all its possibilities...

Why are modifications to original messages and comments to original messages are ignored?

In Hubzilla, you can configure any channel to your liking in detail. A "forum" is just a template with a typical set of permission limits (that can easily be modified). This makes Hubzilla highly flexible (and therefore, more complex to the newcomer). So a forum channel owner may or may not grant other users (e.g. the forum's contacts) the rights to edit.

As Mario wrote, this forum should allow edits (Just tested, too: In HQ view, no problem).

But I did report previously that I observed inconsistencies between available options (e.g. edit, reply, like, save in folder, toggle status) between views in stream, in single thread l (HQ), and via OAuth directly in the channel on the remote hub of the thread author (in this case, the forum's channel). And I have no idea why...

Not sure if this is what you are referring to.

E.g., in stream, I see your comment only with the cogwheel, containing items "display source" and " delete" (which, of course does not delete your comment from the forum, only from my stream view).

When I click on it, it is opened in HQ, and there, I see also see the like and reply icons, and the cogwheel menu offers a lot of items.

And on zotadel.net/channel/support (logged in via OAuth), I see a like, dislike icon, no reply icon, and the cogwheel menu only offers " link to source". But there is a editor field below to respond with a comment.

I have to admit this is confusing to me, too. But your initial issue seemed to refer to something different.

I discovered that delivery of updates in my direct messages to the forum or any other forum over federated hubzilla/zap instances is unreliable. It sometimes works. Sometimes, it doesn't.

Hm... That should not be the case, actually, and I am not sure how to reproduce that. Maybe you could describe your testcase more in detail for us to follow better. I do not exactly understand what you mean by "Direct message to the forum" - To my understanding, a DM is a private message from one channel to another (It will not appear on the channels wall / forum). So I am not sure at exactly where you edit exactly what.

Direct modification or deletion of my own forum posts and my own forum comments for the first few months or weeks seems a lot more reliable than delivery of updates from an account to a forum.

For example, I do not understand what you compare here (modify forum posts vs. delivery of updates from account to forum), and what you mean by "the first few months or weeks" (Controlled by you?)

Your account (login by emails) can be associated with several identities (channels), each one of which can send direct messages (private) or wall posts (public posts to a forum, or a person to share his/her wall). DMs are displayed and editable on your identities HQ only, public posts are displayed and editable when visiting the forum's wall you posted them to, from your identity's stream and HQ - As I stated above, the functions available are inconsistent between those three views on the same post (for me, too). Direct messages work as expected.

Indeed, more help docs are needed to tell the users what happens in the communication depending on DM (the @! stuff), depending on posting on other walls, depending on how to react in the stream etc.

Yes, the screenpics are great, thank you - This actually is the same problem I reported in a previous forum issue.

I agree that, independent of where I view a post, the options should be identical - When I can modify my original post to the forum, but it does (or might) not change the forum post displayed, there is little value in that. At least, a warning about it would be a good thing. When I actually can modify the forum post displayed, by modifying it locally, that should be possible in the forum too (or at least display a link for editing this post locally)...

I agree. Access to the original post was removed from the wall-to-wall view because it led to confusion and some people ended up replying to their original post and not to the shared forum/group post; and even the group owner ended up replying to the wrong one. This was an even more challenging UX problem. Anyway, that's the reason. There are some creative solutions available - none of which are ideal. One of these would be to present the original wall-to-wall post only to the original author (not to the group owner) without the possibility of interaction, but only the ability to edit/delete - and this would edit/delete the forwarded group post accordingly. That's basically what we did with the remote view. Another option might be to send you a copy of the wall-to-wall post so you can edit it on your own site. Another possibility is that ActivityPub folks will actually figure out a way to provide groups that support privacy and permissions and nomadic identity. Don't hold your breath waiting for this one to happen. I've been sitting on this for a few months now hoping a better answer would emerge, but those are the best ideas I've got at the moment.

So it will probably get fixed "someday". In the meantime, how it works today is that you can edit only if you post remotely. So if you want to edit forum posts, you should probably post remotely.
